How to Build Your Ultimate Minimalist Capsule Wardrobe
Embracing Your Personal Style with a Minimalist Capsule Wardrobe
As someone who dislikes shopping sprees and the fast fashion industry, I found that building a capsule wardrobe is the perfect solution for me.
For months, I have been attempting to build a minimalist closet that reflects my personal style, but somehow, everything else was a priority every time.
In the end, I realised how much time I spend deciding what to wear and how stressful it can become to have a closet full of different clothing items but still nothing to wear.
This year, I want to simplify and level up my life in every possible way, and my wardrobe is next on the list. Before we dive into building a minimalist capsule wardrobe, I would like to mention a few things that will help you choose outfits that are perfect for you and only YOU!
First Step - Pieces of Clothing Based on Your Body Type
Understanding your body shape is crucial for selecting pieces that enhance your body type. Remember, there is no "ugly" body type; we all need to find what best complements our body shape and individual style.
Identifying your body shape—pear, hourglass, apple, or rectangular—helps you choose new clothes that flatter your proportions. You can easily find this information on Pinterest. This approach nicely builds a versatile, more minimalist wardrobe that suits your unique body shape.
The Importance of Knowing Your Colors
I was always curious about colour analysis and what my season is based on my skin tone, so I tried to find the answers on my own, but I honestly did not understand the concept. A few months ago, I found Clothes&Confidence on Instagram and decided to book an appointment with Bekah and learn from the expert!
For a long time, black has been my favourite colour. But lately, I have also started enjoying earth-toned colours, especially if they are pale and look washed out. Through the colour analysis process, we discovered that I was actually a Soft Autumn, which was perfect for me because these were still earthy tones I like to wear but just a little bit warm-toned.
Bekah also showed me the Soft Summer palette, which is my sister season. Some of the colours from the palette were too cool-toned for me, which washed me out. But I can still incorporate and combine them with other warm-toned colours.
I also found out what kind of jewellery looks good on me and what my WOW colours are (if I wold like to wear only one colour in my outfit)! And yes, the colour of your jewellery can also make a huge difference in how you look!
I have already started buying essential pieces in my season's colour palette, mostly timeless items that don't go out of fashion and that I can combine with different outfits. The 1/3 and 2/3 Rule in Clothing
Bekah also introduced me to the 1/3 and 2/3 rule. Instead of splitting your outfit into equal halves, aim for a 1/3 to 2/3 ratio to enhance your proportions and overall look.
1/3 on top, 2/3 on bottom: Wear shorter tops (like crop tops or tucked-in shirts) with high-waisted pants, skirts, or shorts.
2/3 on top, 1/3 on bottom: Pair longer tops or dresses with shorter skirts or shorts.
How can you do that:
High-Waisted Bottoms and Cropped Tops: Perfect for creating a longer leg line and a defined waist.
Long Tops and Short Bottoms: Great for a stylish, top-heavy look.
Layering and Belts: Use these to break up an outfit and create the desired proportions.
Key Pieces for a Minimalist Capsule Wardrobe - Minimalist Wardrobe Essentials
The best things to buy to grow your capsule wardrobe need to be versatile pieces that you can wear for different looks while incorporating your unique style. The best way to start is to get essential items like pairs of jeans, a basic tank top, a white button-down shirt, a denim jacket, etc.
My personal minimalist wardrobe checklist:
Basic T-shirts, tank tops and long-sleeved T-shirts in your color season.
A leather jacket is one of the must-have classic pieces - especially if you like to be bold!
Jeans, lightweight pants (linen or organic cotton ones), jogging pants, etc.
Shorts! Bike shorts, jorts, pleated shorts, bermuda shorts... also choose depending on your style.
The bodysuit is such a versatile style piece - there are different ways to incorporate it into your wardrobe, especially for a casual look.
If you don't know where to start, create a list with links and photos in your Notes app. I also created a Pinterest board for inspiration.
Dressing According to Your Venus Sign
If you are still unsure what kind of style is for you, understanding your Venus sign can help you find your personal style and express yourself through fashion. Venus, the planet of love and beauty, influences your aesthetic preferences and sense of style.
First, use an astrology chart or an online calculator to find your Venus sign. I have been using Cafe Astrology to get my birth chart for free.
My Venus sign is Aquarius, which means I should be bold and make brave outfit combinations. It also says I should take care of my dental and skincare health and emphasise my calves with knee-high boots or socks.
Not all tips that I read resonate with me, but ones that do, I will gladly incorporate into my personal style!
Benefits of a Capsule Wardrobe
With a capsule wardrobe, you have fewer items and fewer decisions to make each day. This approach means less time spent deciding what to wear, making your mornings and special occasions stress-free.
Promotes Sustainability
A capsule wardrobe encourages a minimalist lifestyle, focusing on fewer, higher-quality pieces rather than frequent new purchases. This approach has a positive environmental impact by reducing waste and the demand for fast fashion.
Reduces Clutter
A capsule wardrobe leads to less clutter in your closet. By focusing on fewer versatile pieces, you avoid the chaos of a packed wardrobe and enjoy a more organized space. And just imagine how easy it would be to pack for your next trip!
Cost-Effective in the Long Run
While the initial investment in high-quality pieces may seem costly, it pays off in the long run. These items last longer and maintain their fit and appearance better than cheaper alternatives.
This reduces the frequency of new purchases, ultimately saving you a lot of money. Besides, knowing you have a reliable selection of easy pieces for any occasion means you’re less likely to make impulsive buys that clutter your current wardrobe.
Perfect for Different People and Lifestyles
A minimalist wardrobe can be tailored to fit the needs of different people and their unique lifestyles. Whether you need business attire for work, casual clothes for weekends, or chic outfits for special occasions, a capsule wardrobe can be customized to suit your individual requirements.
Conclusion
This easy way to manage your clothing ensures that each piece serves a purpose and enhances your overall look. By investing in high-quality, versatile items, you create a wardrobe that not only looks great but also stands the test of time.
